Cattlemen's Update Program

The University of Nevada, Reno will host the annual Cattlemen's Update in person and virtually in 2026, from January 12 to 16. This event provides ranchers with current research-based information about issues that may affect the efficiency, productivity, profitability, and sustainability of their businesses and Nevada's cattle industry.

Program Overview

The Cattlemen's Update is a week-long event that brings together cattle producers, stakeholders, and University and industry experts for knowledge-sharing and networking. The program includes various sessions, both in-person and virtual, covering topics such as animal health, grazing management, and market trends.

Session Details

• 2026 Fire Outlook & Rancher Liaison Program: An overview of the upcoming fire outlook and a focused highlight on the rancher liaison program, offering timely insights and practical strategies for Nevada's ranching communities.
• Vet Animal Health: Discussions of current animal health issues in Nevada and the West, featuring speakers such as Randy Wallstrum, DVM, and Sarah Hummel, DVM.
• USDA Reorganization Overview: An update on the USDA reorganization and its implications for the cattle industry.
• State Meat Inspection Program: A presentation by Shayda Sanjideh, Meat & Poultry Inspection Project Manager, Nevada Department of Agriculture.
• Cattlemen's Update Keynote Speaker: A keynote address by Tipton D. Hudson, Professor, Rangeland & Livestock Management, Washington State University Extension, on the importance of people skills in driving future grazing enterprises.
• Building Biosecurity Plans: A session on resources for Nevada livestock producers to build biosecurity plans, presented by Tracy Shane, State Livestock Extension Specialist.
• Genetics, Reproduction & Heifer Retention: An overview of using EPDs and DNA tools for herd improvement, synchronization, and AI cost, presented by Luis Schütz, assistant professor, College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources.
• Nevada Cattle Market Financial Outlook: A presentation on opportunities, risks, and evaluating heifer retention decisions, by Shannon Neibergs, Western Extension Risk Management Center, Washington State University.

Special Sessions

• Local Insights and Approaches to Wildfire Resilience: A session bringing together ranchers, fire personnel, and agency representatives to discuss collaborative approaches for pre-fire preparedness, fire response, and post-fire recovery.
• Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA): A training session for youth ages 8-21 on animal well-being, food safety, and character development.

Cost and Registration

The cost of the workshop is $20 per ranch. Registration is required for the virtual webinar and in-person sessions.
